Sancho’s big game record

Sancho’s performance for England in the Euro 2020 quarter-final against Ukraine showed flashes of his quality. He went straight into the side and played like he had been in the team all tournament long.

One of the last competitive matches he had started was the German Cup final, as he helped Dortmund win against RB Leipzig. He played a key role in his team’s win, scoring twice.

Sancho had been a persistent thorn in the side of RB Leipzig for year. In seven matches against them he scored six goals and provided four assists.

The United bound winger also stepped up in the Revierderby, Dortmund’s derby with Schalke. He scored two goals and provided three assists in seven games.

Against Bayern it has been tougher. Dortmund have lost five of the seven matches Sancho played against the perennial German champions. The winger still managed to score once and provide one assist. This reflects the toughness of the games against Bayern, but Sancho has still been able to get in amongst the goals.

In the Champions League Sancho has had further impact. He scored against Barcelona at the Nou Camp and managed to provide an assist against the defensive astute Atletico Madrid.

So at the age of just 21 Sancho has goals against Bayern Munich, Barcelona and multiple strikes against RB Leipzig on his CV. You could not ask for more from a young player coming into the club.

For Sancho it has always been easy, he is not intimidated by high pressure games, he thrives on it. This goes back to his time in City’s academy years ago. In two derby games against Manchester United’s under-18s Sancho scored one and provided one assist.

Big games from the start

This all bodes well for United as Sancho will be tested right away at United. His competitive debut could be against Leeds on the first day of the league season.

Then into October and November, United have a run of games against Liverpool, Leicester, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City. And there will be Champions League games mixed in too.

You could argue that every Manchester United match is a big game, such is the pressure, but some are bigger than others. Sancho has done everything asked of him at Dortmund and will embrace the challenge, and he will have the help of a group of very talented teammates.
