Lisandro Martinez is a current fan favourite at Manchester United, and his dream club legend to play with is a club legend.
Since being signed from Ajax in 2022, Lisandro Martinez has rarely put a foot wrong in a Manchester United shirt when he’s played – making good on his £48.5m transfer fee and proving countless Premier League pundits wrong.
Last season was a disappointing one as he suffered injury set-back after injury set-back – although he returned and was pivotal for the FA Cup final win.
Erik ten Hag clearly places a lot of value on the United No.6, and alongside the brilliant Matthijs de Ligt there has been a real improvement within the defensive set-up at Old Trafford this season – also helped by the top-form of Andre Onana.
Now, the Argentine has been asked which former United player he would most have liked to play alongside. His answer couldn’t be clearer.

What Lisandro Martinez said about Nemanja Vidic
In a video on the JD Sports TikTok, a select group of United players have been quizzed over which former club player they’d most want to play alongside.
For Martinez, there was no hesitation in naming one legendary defender who won it all at Old Trafford.
“I would say Nemanja Vidic,” Martinez explained when asked before he went on to wax lyrical about the Serbian who is undoubtedly among the Premier League’s best of all time.
“What a player and what a big mentality… passion, no fear. So yeah I would say Vidic.”
This is far from a surprising choice, considering the pair share a considerable number of traits in terms of their aggression on the pitch – a partnership between the two could frighten the entire league.
Vidic was also named by De Ligt as a player he admired growing up, so it’s safe to say the Serbian has a large impact on the next generation of defenders.
Also in the video, Amad Diallo was asked the same question and he named another 2008 Champions League winner.
“I want to say Rooney because Rooney was one of the best players in Manchester United and one of the best players in history. Yeah, I would love to play with him, but unfortunately, he is too old now.”
Where Martinez ranks among other Manchester United centre-backs
In terms of the greatest Manchester United centre-backs of all time, Martinez doesn’t even make the shortlist right now, despite his talent and ability clearly having the potential to be.
We ranked £7m Vidic third on our list, so that shows just how far he needs to go in order to accomplish this feat. However, for many, over the past decade, Martinez is probably the best centre-back the club has had – with ‘best in world’ claims being levelled from rivals at Martinez.
So assuming Ineos take United back to the level they believe the club belongs at, with league titles and European honours, there is no reason Martinez wouldn’t move up the list if that is playing a key role.
Ultimately honours will determine whether he ends up on the list, but if he is as good as we know he can be, we’re confident he’ll end up in the conversation at least.
