Ligue 1 side Nice looking to oust Newcastle in pursuit of Jesse Lingard

Ligue 1 side Nice are interested in signing Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard before the end of the January transfer window.

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are willing to meet United’s request for a £3.5million loan fee and are also offering a bonus payment if the England international helps them avoid Premier League relegation.

Although the Reds are reluctant to do business with a top-four rival, West Ham assistant manager Stuart Pearce has told talkSPORT the Hammers are still fighting to sign Lingard on loan this month.

The 29-year-old, who is yet to start a Premier League game this season, was rejuvenated during his loan spell at West Ham for the second half of last season. He scored nine goals and made five assists from 16 Premier League matches.

With Lingard set to end his affiliation with Manchester United in the summer when his contract expires in June, clubs are looking to strike a deal with the Red Devils in the remaining days of the winter market.

While Pearce hopes David Moyes’ side can re-sign United’s number 14, he wants to see Lingard back out on the pitch and getting regular game time, regardless of who he is playing for.

Pearce told talkSPORT: “There is no doubt that Jesse is a commodity, who isn’t playing for his football club, that could be a huge benefit to a lot of clubs in the Premier League.

“Ours is certainly one of them, there is no doubt. Everyone is aware that we tried to get Jesse back again last summer.

“That will continue, probably, in this window as well. But it’s down to Jesse. He’s got six months left on his contract. He’ll decide and Manchester United, more importantly, will decide what his future is for the next six months.

“I always feel as though it’s a real shame when a player of that talent is not playing regularly.

“I’ll be delighted if he goes and plays, wherever he goes and plays. If he turns up at West Ham over the next three of four days, it’ll be utopia. If he goes and plays anywhere else in the Premier League, I’ll still be pleased to see him playing.”

Nice reignite interest in Lingard

French outlet Foot Mercato claim that Nice boss Christophe Galtier would be “delighted” to welcome Lingard to the Côte d’Azur club.

Nice tried luring Lingard to France exactly a year ago, but he instead opted for the move to London.

However, whilst a player of Lingard’s “ilk” is “inaccessible” for Ligue 1 clubs outside Paris Saint Germain, according to Foot Mercato, the deal is being seen as “a little complex”, but “not necessarily impossible”.

With Galtier, who won Ligue 1 with Lille last season, guiding the club to second in Ligue 1, the prospect of securing Champions League football “could encourage the Nice management to make an effort” for Lingard.

Lingard is currently out in Dubai training alongside Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot.

With aspirations of being named in Gareth Southgate’s World up squad in nine months time, Lingard cannot afford to allow the remaining four months of the season to fizzle out at Manchester United.

Newcastle are expected to push for Lingard again today, but a surprising move to France, where he would link-up with former Manchester United teammate Morgan Schneiderlin, could be a possibility.
