Lee Grant should have no complaints if he is released this summer

A report in The Mail over the weekend claimed Lee Grant is disappointed to learn he is unlikely to be offered a new Manchester United contract this summer.

Disappointment is understandable. But ultimately Grant can have no complaints if he is released.

Grant’s contract expires at the end of June and he is expected to be let go.

A dream opportunity

Grant signed with United in a surprise move in the summer of 2018, following moves for Diogo Dalot and Fred.

Little did Jose Mourinho or United fans realise it at the time, but Grant was the club’s final signing that summer.

Grant was signed to be a back-up while young goalkeepers Joel Pereira and Dean Henderson were sent out on loan to develop.

Pereira has failed to kick on, while Henderson has gone on to displace Grant as United’s first choice.

Grant has only played for United twice, the most recent of which was a defeat away at Astana in November 2019.

At the age of 38, there is not much case to keep him on. He has had three years at Old Trafford, and should be grateful he has had the opportunity he has.

Obviously if he has been promised an extension, and it has now been taken away, then Grant has reason to be bitter, but ultimately the veteran will look back on his spell at Old Trafford as one of his career highlights.

A goalkeeping overhaul

Grant could be one of four goalkeepers to leave Manchester United this summer.

Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira will also be released when their deals expire.

David de Gea is also likely to be sold, if United can find a buyer, because he is too expensive to use as a back-up.

This will leave United hunting for a second choice. The Sun has reported West Brom’s Sam Johnstone could be an option to return to Old Trafford.

Youngster Nathan Bishop is likely to be the third option, replacing Grant.

Beyond that there are young prospects Jacob Carney and Matej Kovar. United have the depth to allow Grant to say goodbye.
