Kobbie Mainoo stance on signing new contract, how much Man Utd expect to pay him

Manchester United have been in contract talks with Kobbie Mainoo for almost an entire year but it seems closer than ever.

Since Ineos took charge of Manchester United, gone are the days of contracts being handed out to just any player in the squad.

In fact, only two players have been given new contracts in the 15 months since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took over United’s footballing operations.

These contracts have been reserved for star players, with Bruno Fernandes signing an extension for United last summer. The second, came in January when Amad Diallo was awarded a new contract by United, earned through his performances.

Within the squad, there really aren’t a lot of players deserving of new contracts, but there are a few United can’t afford to not lock into new deals.

Kobbie Mainoo looking to earn similar to Amad Diallo at Manchester United

Along with Amad, Kobbie Mainoo has also been in line for a new deal this season, albeit there is less of an urgency. However, now Graeme Bailey has told United in Focus understands that plans are moving forward,

United are ready to reward Mainoo for his breakthrough – as United in Focus revealed, the England international was close to agreeing terms last season, but because of the off-field issues with INEOS’ new footballing department – it meant talks ran on and then into this year.

We understand that Mainoo wants to remain at Manchester United – he loves the club, has become an England international with United and sees his future with them.

United in Focus is aware both Mainoo and United’s camp have downplayed suggestions that Mainoo wanted a deal that could be pushing £200,000-a-week – but it is believed that a deal worth close to £150,000-a-week is looking likely.

Lines of communication have remained open between Mainoo and United and talks are due to take place before the end of the season with the hope the 19-year-old has put pen to paper by that point.

United know that they have Mainoo tied down to 2028 potentially – as they hold a one-year option on his deal that currently runs to 2027 – but they want that extended to 2030, on improved terms.

Where would Kobbie Mainoo rank in Manchester United’s top earners?

Mainoo is currently one of United’s lowest earners with a £20,000-a-week contract currently, so a rise more in line with his teammates would be deserved.

Using the £150,000-a-week estimated contract for Mainoo would instantly see him shoot up the wage rankings at the club.

Mainoo would be earning the same amount as Eriksen and Shaw – both of whom Ineos would hope to see the back off this year.

For the quality and potential Mainoo has, it is a good investment in the future by Ineos to lock him down to a new deal with £150,000-a-week cheap compared to some of his less important teammates.
