Jose Mourinho made Scott McTominay repay him for 2017 Man United moment in touching reunion

Scott McTominay went head-to-head with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s Benfica in the Champions League.

It was Jose Mourinho who came out on top in the European clash, with Benfica picking up a 2-0 win over Napoli in Portugal.

Scott McTominay has been in great form for Napoli in recent weeks, but he was unable to turn the tide against Mourinho.

Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund was also in action. He scored twice against Juventus in his last outing but was unable to build on that performance against Benfica.

After the full-time whistle, Mourinho shared a wholesome interaction with Scott McTominay.

At United, Mourinho gave McTominay his debut in the first team after being impressed by his performances in the academy.

Mourinho loved working with McTominay and still considers him one of the better players he handed a debut to across his managerial career.

Last year, Mourinho revealed he keeps in touch with McTominay, and he approached his former midfielder for his shirt after the Champions League clash on Wednesday night.

Mourinho turned up to his post-match press conference with a bag, and when asked by reporters what was inside, he replied: “It’s McTominay’s shirt. I put him in, I benched Pogba for him. The least he could do was give me his shirt.”

Mourinho gave McTominay his senior United debut in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, where he was one of four academy players named as starters.

McTominay played the full 90 minutes against Palace while Paul Pogba was rested ahead of the Europa League final.

After the match, McTominay said: “It’s just a dream to be playing in front of all these people and winning the game and doing what we do on the pitch.

“Throughout my career I want to be playing in the Premier League so that’s the most important thing for me, to get as many of these games as I possibly can and hopefully push into the first-team.”

McTominay went on to make 255 appearances for United across all competitions, before completing a £25m move to Napoli.
