James Garner’s loan spell at Watford was terminated at the end of last week. He quickly found a new loan move to Nottingham Forest.

Garner started brightly at Watford, but in a predictable turn of events, he lost his place after the Hornets sacked their manager.

He did not feature at all in January and a loan move was in everybody’s best interests.

At Forest he joins a team in 21st place out of 24 teams in the Championship, with team team taking a big backwards step after last season’s play-off push.

Garner made 20 appearances for Watford in total including 12 starts.

The 19-year-old told Forest’s YouTube channel: “Coming from under 23s football straight into the Championship, some people say its possibly the hardest league in the world in terms of some of the stuff you come up against, pitches, the way teams play.

“It’s been difficult to adapt but its a challenge and I like a challenge. There’s a lot of talented players in the squad I’m very surprised where we are in the table.”

Garner is up against it in the respect that Forest are enduring a wretched season and supporters are frustrated with what they have seen so far. First impressions count for a lot and there will be some scepticism about the fact he was deemed expendable by Watford.

Garner should get guidance

Counting in his favour is Forest’s new boss, Chris Hughton, who took over at the end of last year. He is a widely respected manager who should be able to help Garner a lot.

Hughton told Forest’s website he is looking forward to getting Garner on board and believes he can play a big role.

He said: “James is a promising young talent in central midfield and that is an area where we’ve had injury problems and players missing in recent weeks.

“He has completed a good spell at Watford where he has picked up some much-needed Championship experience and we’re confident he will be a valuable asset to us between now and the end of the season.”

Garner should be able to get some good guidance from Hughton, and it is important to have a manager who believes in him. Watford’s new boss Xisco Munoz clearly preferred other options.

Forest face their rivals Derby at the end of the month in a clash which could see Garner go up against United teammate Teden Mengi, who is set to join the Rams on loan, The Mail report.
