‘His career is over’ – Man United star expected to retire in the summer despite ‘quality’ Ruben Amorim praise

Manchester United’s clear-out is still far from over and one player has been tipped to hang up his boots when the current season comes to an end.

In the transfer window just gone, Manchester United seemed more focused on offloading players than welcoming new ones.

Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven were presented to Old Trafford as the only two new signings, but Marcus Rashford left on loan to Aston Villa while Tyrell Malacia and Antony also departed.

There will be plenty more outgoings in the summer as Ineos continue their clear-out at Old Trafford. United’s owners want to win the Premier League by 2028 and achieving that goal will require ruthless decisions in the transfer window.

Similar to last summer, several players are set to leave as free agents once their contracts expire. Among those in their final year is Christian Eriksen.

Christian Eriksen tipped to retire this summer

After arriving in Manchester, Dorgu said he is excited to play with Eriksen, but their time as teammates may be extremely limited.

Peter Schmeichel has urged Eriksen to leave, suggesting he is no longer at a level to play regular Premier League football. The Dane is now 32 years old, so he may have a point.

Eriksen has made 21 appearances this season across all competitions, but he has slid down Ruben Amorim’s pecking order in midfield.

Eriksen is not in talks over a new deal, so an exit in the summer seems increasingly likely. Former Denmark international Thomas Gravesen believes the United star may even announce his retirement.

Speaking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Gravesen said: “It’s 100 percent over for Christian Eriksen at Manchester United this summer, and I also fear that his career is over.

“Where is he going to go? Where is he going to go and earn 60 million kroner a year? I have a hard time seeing that.

“He has probably earned the money he should, but I think that the development that Christian has been in the last few years is downward.

“It is sad to see the situation that Christian Eriksen is in. He is one of the players in Denmark who has given us the most. He has shone and been our best man, so it is sad if his career ends like this.”

Ruben Amorim admires Christian Eriksen

Amorim may not view Eriksen as a regular starter at United, but he has turned to the Dane at times when he needs to inject creativity and calm.

When Amad scored his hat-trick against Southampton, it was Eriksen who provided a brilliant pass for his second.

After that match, Amorim suggested that Eriksen still has a big part to play at United.

As quoted by The Mirror, Amorim said: “He has the quality to make that kind of pass and we need all the players to win games, 10 minutes or 90 minutes all the players are important to change the course of the season.”

Since that pass against Southampton, Eriksen has started against Rangers and FCSB in the Europa League and also made a late cameo against Crystal Palace.

It does seem inevitable that he will move on in the summer, but Eriksen certainly still has more to give elsewhere.
