‘He is spectacular’… International boss raves over ‘magic’ star Ruben Amorim wants at Manchester United

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has already made one pledge to his former employers Sporting.

As outgoing Sporting boss, Ruben Amorim promised not to sign any of the club’s players for Manchester United… in January.

That will not stop him going in for them next summer, with striker Viktor Gyokeres a very tempting option, considering United’s need for a goalscoring centre-forward.

Another player Amorim wants is Sporting wonderkid Geovany Quenda. According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, United are considering trying to strike a deal in January, for the winger to join in the summer, landing him, yet keeping the head coach’s promise.

Geovany Quenda set for Portugal debut

Geovany Quenda has been called up into the Portugal national team at the age of just 17 and is hoping to get onto the pitch for his country.

Quenda has a chance to make his debut in their upcoming game against Croatia, with Portugal already securing top spot in their UEFA Nations League group, five points clear with one game remaining.

With Bruno Fernandes suspended after a cleverly-timed yellow card from Manchester United’s perspective, there will certainly be changes for Portugal for the fixture.

Speaking ahead of the tie, Portugal boss Roberto Martinez made his feelings very clear on Quenda’s potential.

He explained, via Mais Futebol: “He fits in on the right wing, as we worked on in September. That is the position Quenda will work on tomorrow. It is a position he knows well.

“More than a versatile player, he brings balance and technical ability, not just the position. He is a player with magic and who can make the difference in the final third.

“He is a player with a spectacular future and his experience of being in the national team, whether he plays on the pitch or not, is important.”

Quenda previously played for Portugal’s under-21 side three times, having scored six goals in 18 games for the under-17s. Now he is being fast-tracked into the senior set up.

The wonderkid has 18 appearances for Sporting’s senior team, with two goals and two assists to date.

United interest pre-dates Amorim

Perhaps predictably, Geovany Quenda has been compared to a winger Manchester United signed from Sporting back in 2003, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester United’s interest in signing Quenda actually emerged before Erik ten Hag was sacked; this is not a sudden case of the club deciding he is a target simply because Ruben Amorim was hired.

A Bola claimed in mid-October that United were exploring a possible move for Quenda, and you can only consider that Amorim’s arrival helps the cause.

Amorim knows how to get the most out of Quenda, and is confident he suits his system, with the youngster starring in the recent 4-1 victory over City as a starter, a clear show of faith.
