Former Tottenham striker Harry Kane has admitted that a Manchester United legend might have served as an inspiration for his move to Bayern Munich.

Kane stunned the world this summer after making his sensational exit from Spurs and moving to the defending Bundesliga champions in an initial £86.4m deal.

The 30-year-old Spurs hero was previously linked with Manchester City before Pep Guardiola signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for a £51m fee in 2022.

Kane also attracted interest from United and it seemed the Bayern star could stay in England in a bid to chase down Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record.

Harry Kane talks up Beckham inspiration

Kane has settled into life well under Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel and has already scored three times and registered one assist in three matches.

Speaking to Bild (via Marca), the England captain recalled his experience of seeing David Beckham leave Old Trafford and complete a £24.5m move to Real Madrid.

“Maybe my journey here can be an inspiration for the younger [English] players to do the same and take that step,” Kane said.

“I remember David Beckham making the move from Manchester United to Real Madrid. I was a kid and I was like, ‘Wow, what an amazing experience.’

“Maybe I took Beckham as an example: I always wanted to see a different league, a different atmosphere.

“So far everything is going very well: on and off the pitch. I admired Robert Lewandowski when he was a young player, he took a fantastic path and set incredible records. I want to reach his level, and maybe even better.”

Ten Hag turned to Hojlund over Kane

United manager Erik ten Hag was finally able to land a striker this summer, despite Kane making his blockbuster move to Bayern.

The Red Devils splashed out a whopping £72m transfer fee to sign Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund from Serie A side Atalanta.

However, United fans have been forced to wait for Hojlund to make his hotly anticipated debut due to a reported back injury he picked up ahead of signing.

Hojlund was ruled out of action in United’s 3-2 comeback win against Nottingham Forest, but Ten Hag has hinted that the striker could feature against Arsenal.

“Not for tomorrow [against Forest],” he said last Friday.

“[He’s] near [to returning]. Today, for the first time, he came into team training, so next week we expect him to do a full week of team training so he is near to the squad.”
