Owen Hargreaves has now insisted that one key Manchester United star has played a bigger role than Bruno Fernandes in the Red Devils’ top four pursuit.

The Red Devils are third in the Premier League table ahead of their final three matches this season and are six points clear of Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Bruno Fernandes has played a sensational role in Manchester United’s huge turnaround in form since Michael Carrick arrived at Old Trafford in January.

The 31-year-old Man Utd captain has an incredible 11 assists in his last 14 Premier League matches after Michael Carrick’s tactical shift of his role for the Red Devils.

Owen Hargreaves puts Senne Lammens ahead of Bruno Fernandes for Man Utd’s top-four challenge under Michael Carrick

Despite his run of form in the second half of the campaign, Bruno Fernandes’ influence did not eclipse Senne Lammens’ role in Owen Hargreaves’ eyes.

Senne Lammens has kept four clean sheets in Michael Carrick’s 14 Premier League matches in charge and has put in strong overall performances for the Red Devils.

The 23-year-old Belgian committed his first major howler for Manchester United in the 3-2 win over Liverpool after his sloppy mistake at Old Trafford last weekend.

Outside of his blip in Man Utd’s encounter with Liverpool, Lammens has impressed in his debut season and Hargreaves praised the Belgium international’s influence.

“I think United looked and thought, What gets us up the table? It’s goals,’ so they added [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo,” he told TNT Sports.

“Guys, that get you 20-plus goals, and they’re third right now, so that’s proven correct.

“But I think if they hadn’t sorted the goalkeeper out, they wouldn’t be in the top four.”

Owen Hargreaves praises Man Utd for how much they spent on Senne Lammens after his Old Trafford impact

Senne Lammens was a late arrival in Ineos’ summer spending spree after Man Utd signed the Belgium international from Royal Antwerp on deadline day in 2025.

United agreed to an initial £18.1m transfer fee and further add-ons to land the former Royal Antwerp star, who ascended to the No 1 role at the Red Devils.

Hargreaves said that Lammens’ brilliant debut season at Old Trafford extends to how much the Red Devils paid to bring him to England from Belgium in the first place.

“I’ll tell you who has probably been the best of all of them, the goalkeeper, Lammens, what did he cost?” Hargreaves asked.

When he was told that Lammens did ‘not’ cost a ‘lot,’ the former Man Utd midfielder responded: “Exactly, value for money, as Joe [Cole] said.”

Lammens has kept six clean sheets in his 30 appearances for Man Utd in the 2025-26 campaign after he succeeded Andre Onana as the Red Devils No 1.
