However, back-to-back errors from Amad Diallo and Senne Lammens gifted Liverpool a way back into the clash.
However, Manchester-born Kobbie Mainoo stepped up and scored the winning goal to give the Red Devils a priceless three points.

Man Utd beat Liverpool 3-2 … Let’s hear your INSTANT REACTION!
Matheus Cunha loves playing Big Six opposition
Matheus Cunha returned to the starting XI after overcoming a hip injury, and he returned with a bang by scoring the opening goal within five minutes.
It means Cunha has now scored against Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa this season. His goal tally for the season is up to nine, and the majority of those have come against elite opposition.
Bruno Fernandes assist confusion
Heading into the match, Fernandes was one assist away from matching the Premier League record.
Matheus Cunha made a ’20’ gesture with his hands when Fernandes’ header set up Sesko’s goal in the first half, but it has not officially been given as an assist.
It means that Fernandes is still on 19 assists for the season.
Champions League football is back at Old Trafford
Because of Bournemouth’s win over Crystal Palace, Manchester United needed a point to mathematically secure Champions League qualification.
A win over arch-rivals Liverpool means United took all three points and guaranteed that Champions League football will be back at the Theatre of Dreams in 2026/27.
Kobbie Mainoo steps up after new contract
In the build-up to the match, it was confirmed that Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford until 2031.
If Elliot Anderson is £125m… What is Kobbie Mainoo’s market value right now?
Not that he's going anywhere…🔒
Ineos are banking on Mainoo becoming a superstar with the Red Devils, and he put on a superstar display against Liverpool.
The 21-year-old was dominant in midfield up against Dominik Szoboszlai and scored a superb winner in front of the Stretford End.
A worrying second-half collapse
It has been a frustrating trend this season that United have thrown away several results by switching off after the first half.
It happened again in unforgivable circumstances. United were well on top in the first 45 minutes, but let Liverpool back into the game through basic errors.
United’s shape appeared to dissolve and the game descended into chaos. Thankfully, Mainoo stepped up to rescue the game, but there will be some questions about United’s second-half display.
