Five stars who have played for Manchester United and Napoli as Scott McTominay completes transfer

Scott McTominay has completed his transfer from Manchester United to Napoli and has become the sixth player to ever play for both clubs in the process.

Manchester United’s deadline day has now seen the completion of Scott McTominay’s move to Napoli.

Home-grown midfielder McTominay has completed a £25.7m transfer to the Serie A side and leaves United having spent his entire career at Old Trafford and making 255 appearances.

With money tight due to PSR restrictions, McTominay’s transfer will go down as pure profit on the club’s book and has made the impending signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG possible.

McTominay received a hero’s welcome in Naples and United fans are hoping to see him flourish in Italy.

With the Scot becoming the sixth player to ever play for both United and Napoli, here’s a look at the other five.

Edinson Cavani

After first rising to prominence in the European game at Palermo, Edinson Cavani moved to Napoli in 2010 and that’s where he truly established himself as one of the game’s best strikers.

The Uruguayan scored 104 goals in just 138 games over three seasons before earning a big-money move to PSG, where his good fortunes continued.

Cavani bagged 200 goals in 301 games in Paris, becoming the club’s record scorer before being taken over by Kylian Mbappe.

After seven years of success, Cavani ventured to the Premier League when he joined Manchester United on a free transfer. The veteran striker instantly became a fan favourite and earned a new contract after his initial one-year deal.

However, his second season was plagued with injuries and frustratingly long trips to his homeland and he would leave for Valencia before returning to South America in 2023 with Boca Juniors, where he is still playing.

Cavani scored 19 goals and picked up six assists in 59 games for United.

Though his two years at United were over two decades ago now, Laurent Blanc is still fondly remembered at United.

The French centre-back ended his glittering career in Manchester, playing 75 games, and finished things off with a Premier League triumph.

It was much earlier in his career when he rocked up in Naples, when he departed boyhood club Montpellier after making nearly 300 appearances for them.

Blanc would spend just a season at Napoli, scoring six goals in 34 appearances, before returning to France.

Axel Tuanzebe

There were high hopes for Axel Tuanzebe at United but a long list of serious injuries hampered his progress into the first team.

When it was becoming increasingly clear he would not make it at Old Trafford, Tuanzebe began venturing out on loan and that included a short stint at Napoli in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

It wasn’t a successful spell, though, as he made just two appearances and only played 10 minutes in Serie A. Tuanzebe is now back in the Premier League with Ipswich Town.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku hasn’t actually played for Napoli yet as he only joined the club this week after his time at Chelsea finally came to a permanent end.

The Belgian striker has made a £26m switch back to Italy after spending the last two seasons on loan at Inter and Roma.

Lukaku was a United player for two years after signing for a massive £75m but things didn’t work out and he scored just 42 goals in his 96 games.

William Prunier

If you don’t recall, former centre-back William Prunier was brought in on trial in January 1996 and was only supposed to play for the reserves as Sir Alex Ferguson ran the rule over him.

However, an injury crisis at the back meant he had to be thrown into the deep end.

Prunier actually had a promising debut. Despite playing alongside Gary Neville at centre-back, United defeated QPR with the Frenchman even setting one of the goals up.

However, an even more ramshackle United backline – without Peter Schmeichel and Denis Irwin – were then destroyed 4-1 in a humiliating defeat to Tottenham.

Though Ferguson did offer Prunier a contract, he declined it to look for a move elsewhere and never played for United again after the Spurs disaster.

Though the loss wasn’t all his fault, Prunier has still gone down as one of United’s worst-ever players.

He would go on to Denmark, return to France and have spells in Qatar, Belgium and Italy throughout the rest of his career, playing four games for Napoli in 1997. Three of the games were lost, with two to four-goal deficits.
