ESPN experts slam ‘appalling’ Marcus Rashford for statement on Manchester United

Marcus Rashford was supposed to become a Manchester United legend; however, he now won’t play for the club ever again.

When Marcus Rashford broke through at Manchester United, many assumed that Carrington had produced the next club legend, and his career trajectory had him heading in that direction.

Rashford scored a lot of great goals for United and looked like a legitimate Ballon d’Or contender at one stage in his career, and in another United team from the golden years, he probably goes down as an all-time great.

But after 426 games, 138 goals, and 78 assists, Rashford exited United last January and hasn’t been back since, now on a loan with an option to move permanently to Barcelona.

Prior to his exit, Rashford was frozen out by Ruben Amorim as a result of his interview stating a desire to find a new challenge.

Marcus Rashford slammed for his behaviour at Manchester United

It feels like a lifetime ago that Rashford released a statement wanting to leave United, but it still has ESPN pundits Steve Nicol and Craig Burley up in arms.

Speaking on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Nicol demanded Rashford take responsibility after his interview last year.

“That statement there, there’s only one real thing that sticks out big time, ‘it’s not my fault’. That’s what that statement is.

“How about you take some responsibility? Trying to blame others, oh, nothing’s been consistent, guess what, you can do something about it.

“It’s a bad environment; it’s been consistently bad. As a player, you have to shut everything else off and get your job done. What’s my little piece of the puzzle where you can make it better for everybody, that’s how you are supposed to address it, not blame everybody else.”

Burley also chimed in with his verdict on Rashford’s attitude at United.

“He can drive consistency within himself. Turn up to training and work hard every day. Did he? No.

“He’s consistent when he tracks runners back when he works for his team and presses hard on the field no matter who’s in charge. Amorim, Ten Hag, Solskjaer. Was he consistent in his work rate? The answer is no.

“He can’t control what the club decisions are, but he can control his attitude, and his attitude at Man Utd in the end, not at the start, was appalling.”

Manchester United were failed by Marcus Rashford

While Rashford can argue that he deserved better teammates and more success at United, he fails to remember that he was as inconsistent as anybody at the club over the years.

The academy graduate was capable of the magnificent, but also of the truly awful, which saw a player capable of such brilliance score just eight goals in 43 games through the 2023/24 season.

This came after his 40-goal contribution campaign, which earned him a big new contract, only for those levels to never be touched again until recently; only these have come for Barcelona.

Now, United could lose Rashford permanently for cheap, with the buy option looking more and more ridiculous as he shines for the Catalan side.

As good as he can be on his day, United were let down by Rashford and there was no going back.
