Eduardo Camavinga says he is inspired by Paul Pogba

Eduardo Camavinga was the fortunate beneficiary of Paul Pogba’s bad luck withdrawal from the France international squad.

For the young Rennes wonderkid, this was a bittersweet moment. As he explained to the French press, Pogba is a player he idolises.

Quoted by French newspaper Le Figaro, Camavinga said: “I am inspired by Paul Pogba, an excellent player who has a huge career.”

He added: “I had a very warm welcome, everyone was cool with me, I am in Paul Pogba’s room which is very large.”

Camavinga is a special talent, one who The Guardian described this week as’the most exciting teenager in world football’.

While Mason Greenwood may have something to say about that, rightfully, it highlights how well thought of Camavinga is.

A player Manchester United have been linked to

Camavinga is a player who has been linked with Manchester United ever since establishing himself for Rennes’ first team last season.

The Sun reported last year how he was on United’s radar, but Rennes have been quite clear they want to keep him.

Real Madrid have been repeatedly linked [via AS]. Camavinga is in no rush to leave, at just 17.

He told Telefoot, reported BeSoccer: “To put it simply, I’m Rennes through and through. I have years left on my contract and I’m happy to be at Rennes. I will be at Rennes for this season.”

As we reported earlier this year, when the leagues went into lockdown and Ligue 1 was cancelled, Camavinga had made more tackles than any player in any of Europe’s top five leagues, with 119.

When he does become available, possibly next summer, he will easily cost in excess of £50 million.

Playing for the French national team will only increase the hype around him, and his future price tag.

There is no reason why United cannot get into the mix to push for him in 2021.

The temptation to feature alongside and learn from Paul Pogba on a weekly basis puts United firmly in the mix.
