Donny van de Beek’s wages show United are getting salaries right again

Donny van de Beek’s move to Manchester United has the potential to be a significant one on the pitch.

Off the pitch, De Beek’s reported salary will ruffle few feathers. It is a remarkably well-priced contract.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports Van de Beek will earn 120,000 Euros per week, equating to £108,000.

There will be bonuses available, but as a base salary, this is a good figure for the 23-year-old to be earning, and according to The Express, nearly treble what he was earning at Ajax.

United are getting it right

The Mail reported a year ago that United had the biggest wage bill in Premier League history, and this is not something to be proud of.

Too many players were being overpaid, and this summer the highest earner, Alexis Sanchez, was allowed to leave to join Inter Milan.

But there are still problems remaining, with high wages a big factor behind the club’s struggles to shift Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard.

The Times reported in January that Rojo earns £8.3 million per year, which breaks down at £160,000 per week. This led to a possible move to Sporting falling through at the times.

He went on loan to Estudiantes, but there is no chance of the Argentine club being able to afford his salary permanently.

The comparatively moderate wages given to Van de Beek are reflective of the new direction United are taking.

While it seems odd that Van de Beek is earning less than Rojo, mistakes of the past must be moved on from, not used as a reason to comparatively overpay.

Bruno Fernandes’ wages are similar to Van de Beek, in the £100,000 per week bracket, The Sun reported earlier this year.

The right players

United are targeting players who want to play for the club first and foremost, and are not motivated by money, like it appeared Alexis Sanchez was.

Throwing cash around has got us nowhere in the post-Fergie era, and was putting tremendous pressure on the club’s wage bill, making a change in strategy necessary, at least until many of the overpaid squad players are sold.

Jadon Sancho could come into a different category. There have been all sorts of number speculated upon with regard to how much he could earn if he signs. He is likely to be an exception.

By and large, United are attempting to remodel how the club does business and pays players, and Van de Beek’s salary is reflective of this.

With a sensible £39 million fee, for a player who will strengthen the team in a key area, in every regard, the signing of Van de Beek is a step in the right direction for Manchester United.
