Manchester United have completed the signing of former Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Karl Darlow has joined Manchester United as the second official signing of the 2026 summer transfer window, after Andrey Santos’ £48m arrival.

Unlike Santos, Darlow has joined as a free agent, meaning United have not paid a transfer fee to secure his signature.

Darlow, 35, brings plenty of experience to Michael Carrick’s squad with 279 professional appearances to his name. He has had spells at Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Leeds United before his move to Old Trafford.

Jason Wilcox comments on Karl Darlow’s Man United move

United sporting director Jason Wilcox sat alongside Darlow as he was pictured signing his contract.

Wilcox explained in his unveiling comments exactly why United have pursued a deal for the Wales international.

Speaking via United’s website, Wilcox said: “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad.

“We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.”

Darlow’s “work ethic” and “determined personality” are the key points here. He has been brought in for his experience and attitude, with his on-pitch ability being secondary.

Karl Darlow counts towards homegrown requirement

According to Premier League regulations, every top-flight side must have at least eight “homegrown” players in their official 25-man squad.

To qualify as homegrown, a player must have been registered with any club affiliated with the Football Association (FA) or Football Association of Wales (FAW) for at least three seasons, or 36 months, prior to their 21st birthday.

Darlow came through the academy ranks at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest before making his professional debut, so he will contribute towards United’s homegrown figures.

There is no denying that Senne Lammens is United’s number one, so Darlow comes in to add experience and character to the dressing room.
