Karl Darlow has become Manchester United’s second signing of the window, and it likely means curtains for a certain wonderkid at the club this season.
The club have moved to secure a homegrown goalkeeper in Karl Darlow, who signed on a free transfer, having been with Leeds United last season.
There’s no doubt that Darlow comes in as the backup to Senne Lammens, but he did well to usurp Lucas Perri at Leeds last season.
What this signing also means is that a certain Man Utd wonderkid is set to depart without getting a proper chance in pre-season.

Is Radek Vitek READY to be playing for Manchester United?
Can he challenge Lammens? Or does he need another loan?
Karl Darlow transfer decides Radek Vitek’s Man Utd future
Radek Vitek is currently back at Carrington after a sparkling loan spell with Bristol City last season, which saw him clean sweep every award at the Championship club.
Vitek really couldn’t have done much more to convince Man Utd that he’s ready for the Premier League.
In fact, he has probably done too well for Man Utd not to give him clarity on his future, because he can’t afford a season of being Lammens’ backup.
Another move, loan or permanent sale, was always on the cards, and the timing of Darlow’s signing proves that United have made up their mind.
As it stands, it is extremely unlikely that Vitek gets even a single 90-min game in pre-season, starting with a game against Wrexham on July 18.
If Vitek is leaving, then it makes no sense for United to jeopardise the move by playing him in pre-season, where the chance to pick up an injury increases.
This is perhaps why Darlow’s transfer has been wrapped up so quickly, because he can take the gloves from Vitek now in the absence of both Altay Bayindir and Senne Lammens.
United need to control Vitek’s future
If United are to let Vitek leave, they need to do so in a way that they don’t live to regret it.
What should Man Utd do with Radek Vitek in 2026/27?
It’s clear that he will be a Premier League goalkeeper one day, so the minimum United must do is make a sell-on and buy-back clause non-negotiable in any deal for him.
Another ideal case scenario would be to extend his contract and send him on another loan, this time to a Premier League side.
That will increase the calibre of suitors and potential transfer fee being offered for him, and it’s something the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea do all the time.
Either way, this is a golden opportunity for United to have control of a player who’s on the rise in his career, instead of selling someone they can’t use.
They need to leverage this position completely and get the best deal for the club.
