David de Gea has sent a message reflecting on Manchester United’s Europa League final loss.

De Gea was the unlucky player to miss his spot-kick, with his penalty saved in a nerve-wracking shootout.

While not many could blame De Gea for missing his penalty, he did come in for criticism and scrutiny for failing to save all 11 he faced.

After the result, De Gea was consoled by his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The Spaniard shared this image as he reflected on the loss.

De Gea is clearly thankful for the way the coaching staff and teammates rallied around him.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was seen consoling him at full-time.

De Gea’s shootout misfortune was one aspect of the Europa League final loss.

United should never have allowed the match to reach penalty kicks in the first place.

Villarreal were stubborn and well drilled opponents, but also beatable ones.

There was a spell after United’s first goal where United were well on top and creating chances, and the team failed to capitalise.

De Gea’s poor record saving penalties was undoubtedly a factor, but it was not the only reason for the loss.
