How many times David de Gea has saved a penalty and how Dean Henderson compares

Add as preferred source on Google

David De Gea once again saved 0 penalties as Manchester United beat Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final shootout.

United’s outfield players were simply brilliant in dispatching their spot kicks. Nearly every strike was inch-perfect.

Thanks to this, United march on to the FA Cup final where they face Manchester City.

But with yet another terrible shootout performance for David De Gea, this begs the question – whats his penalty record like and how does it compare to Dean Henderson’s? Here’s everything you need to know.

De Gea’s penalty record

Excluding the shootout penalties, De Gea has faced 72 career spot kicks.

De Gea has saved 13 of them for club and country, which is just 18 per cent – not a great save percentage at all.

The last time De Gea saved a penalty was in the Premier League against Watford during the 2021-22 season – when he denied Ismaila Sarr from 12 yards.

Prior to this point, De Gea had actually saved from some stellar names, including Leighton Baines, Robin van Persie, Steven Gerrard, and during his time at Atletico Madrid, David Trezeguet and Diego Milito.

But since then De Gea has conceded six consecutive penalty kicks for club and country.

Three of these were this season, against Real Sociedad, Chelsea and Barcelona.

With such a recent poor record saving spot kicks, De Gea’s confidence in this area has been drained somewhat, and even during the shootout against Brighton he did not at all look convincing.

What is Dean Henderson’s record like?

Dean Henderson was United’s alternative, who is currently on loan to Nottingham Forest. He has a somewhat stellar record of saving penalties.

Henderson has faced 24 penalties at a professional level and only 13 have been scored. That’s a 46% success rate for the goalkeeper.

Three of the penalty saves Henderson has made has come this season for Forest, including against some stellar names like Harry Kane and Wilfried Zaha.

By no means does this mean Henderson is the better goalkeeper, however – it is something to think about when shootouts do arise.
