Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United looks completely different to what was expected a few months ago.
At the end of the 2025/26 season, Marcus Rashford won La Liga with Barcelona, scoring a crucial goal against arch-rivals Real Madrid and then confessing his desire to stay at Camp Nou.
In that moment, it looked certain that Rashford would sign for Barcelona permanently, and the £26 million buy option was a vehicle in which to make it happen.
But Barcelona refused Rashford’s buy option and instead signed Anthony Gordon in a move which raised eyebrows in the footballing world.
Now, Rashford is set to return to United, and it seems the bridges burned on his exit are now being repaired.

What’s YOUR message to Marcus Rashford after Barcelona’s deal for Anthony Gordon?
Should Man Utd use this reality check to try and bring Rashford back?
Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United U-turn
Rashford blatantly said he wants to join Barcelona, in fact he said: “I am not a magician, but if I were, I would stay.”
That says everything we need to know about Rashford’s ideal summer plan, but it has not worked out for him.
Now, both Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein have reported that Rashford has held ‘amicable’ talks with United about potentially staying at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick.
Carrick has always kept the door open to Rashford’s return, and it seems the 28-year-old winger is now considering it as an option.
United fans would welcome Rashford back. After all, he is one of their own. But his adoration for Barcelona has been heard loud and clear.
It’s still a very complex situation, but compared to where United were a few months ago, Ineos have transformed it into a win-win scenario.
What is Marcus Rashford truly worth in 2026 after his Barcelona loan?
Barcelona have a £26m buy option for Marcus Rashford, but what is he actually worth in today's market?
Marcus Rashford will stay, or be sold for £40m
During his Barcelona loan, it seemed there were only two options available when it came to Rashford:
- Rashford is signed by Barcelona for £26 million
or
- Rashford rejoins Barcelona on another loan deal
United kept a firm stance on Rashford, immediately closing the door on another loan deal. Barcelona turned down the £26m buy option and now the asking price has increased.
There is now a £40m release clause in Rashford’s contract – available for any club other than Liverpool and Manchester City.
Some may argue that a £40m valuation is still too small for Rashford, but it is a drastic improvement on what he was expected to be sold for just a few months ago.
Additionally, Rashford has impressed at the World Cup, so it only makes sense that his valuation has grown.
Now, United are looking at getting a superstar left winger back in their squad, or a £40 million transfer fee. Quite the turnaround from what was expected last season.
