Manchester United have missed out on another midfield target with Tottenham agreeing a fee with West Ham for Mateus Fernandes.

Manchester United have already missed out on Elliot Anderson, who is joining Manchester City, and now Mateus Fernandes is slipping through their fingers too.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given his iconic ‘Here We Go’ update for Fernandes to join Tottenham with the North London club agreeing to meet West Ham’s £85 million asking price.

Despite reports that Fernandes preferred a move to Old Trafford, United are now set to miss out on his signature and chase alternative targets.

Man United were right to walk away from Mateus Fernandes

While there was plenty of noise about United’s interest in Fernandes, a bid was never submitted.

That is because West Ham wanted a bidding war, and United set their price and stuck to it.

United have lost out on Fernandes, but Ineos did stick to their principles and now Tottenham have overpaid.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe promised fans that United would step away from spending superstar figures on players and instead try to invest smartly in a young and upcoming team.

United have plenty of alternative targets, including Alex Scott, Aurelien Tchouameni and Carlos Baleba.

Man United fans agree with Mateus Fernandes snub

When asked on the TalkingPoints platform, United fans did not want to sign Fernandes for the reported £85m fee.

Supporters agreed unanimously that the fee was extortionate and, while Fernandes is a good player, he wasn’t worth that price.

United have already strengthened their midfield by signing Ederson for £38m, and there is still a long way to go until the summer transfer window closes for Ineos to bring in more midfield reinforcements.

Right now, not bidding for Fernandes looks like smart business. But that is only the case if United can land their alternatives at good prices.
