It feels like an almost weekly event that a new academy ace is drafted into first-team training – now it’s the turn of a 17-year-old defender.

It was just last week that Ruud van Nistelrooy drafted Jayce Fitzgerald into his match-day squad against Leicester City.

After this, the teenaged midfield prodigy was then in first-team training prior to the 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Doing this instantly suggests that the interim head coach rates Fitzgerald highly, with this support Ruben Amorim could feel inclined to also take a look.

However, it is another week and now a new young talent has been involved in senior training for what is the very first time.

Ahead of a favourable Europa League game at Old Trafford against PAOK, he will be hopeful of minutes.

Dan Armer spotted in senior training along with Jack Kingdon

On the eve of match-day four of this season’s Europa League campaign, United have been ramping up preparations at Carrington.

A training session on Wednesday morning saw a handful of academy prospects involved.

17-year-old Daniel Armer was the most eye-catching of those involved, considering he has not been involved at a senior level in training before.

Also making a rare appearance in the first-team session was Jack Kingdon – the two young centre-backs would benefit from the experience of being involved.

Leny Yoro was also involved much to the delight of fans and no doubt the coaches, as he continues to work toward a return after three months out.

Manchester United have a golden defensive age coming through Carrington

For years, Carrington has boasted some of the best and midfield and attacking talents in England – however, developing excellent defensive prospects has proven slightly more complicated.

However, now a quick glance at the players at U21 and U18 levels shows this has changed.

Both Armer and Godwill Kukonki are excellent in defence and look to have everything needed to one day reach an elite level.

Meanwhile, Harry Amass is viewed as special within the club, and finally on the right side summer signing James Overy has been named among the best prospects in world football.

This is enough to leave us excited about the future of the club and confident that we will soon see academy defenders breaking through.
