Manchester United sent the U21s to the newly formed National League Cup on Wednesday night, taking on Forest Green’s senior side.
The new competition gives the U21s yet another chance to face off against some senior teams from England’s lower league clubs.
Travis Binnion’s young Manchester United side took on Forest Green and walked out 3-2 winners on the night.
This was the third outing against senior opponents and a third win for United’s U21s – after also beating Barnsley and Doncaster in the EFL Trophy.
In the game, one super-talented defender was handed his U21 debut in the National League Cup which is the next step in his continual development.

Manchester United U21 overcome Forest Green in National League Cup
On Wednesday night, United were back in action with the U21s beating National League side Forest Green.
The game started badly for United with Forest Green taking the lead after just three minutes.
United however came from behind, scoring twice in four minutes.
Malachi Sharpe scored first, with Ethan Ennis providing the assist while it was Ennis who made it 2-1 moments later – with Habeeb Ogunneye providing the assist.
United threw this lead away after two minutes – with the two sides unseparated until the 77th minute when Victor Musa scored his first U21 goal – with experienced defender Tommy Rowe assisting.
This win has put United top of Group B, just ahead of Oldham.
| # | Club | Games | Points |
| 1 | Manchester United | 1 | 3 |
| 2 | Oldham | 1 | 3 |
| 3 | Altrincham | 1 | 2 |
| 4 | Blackburn U21 | 1 | 1 |
Ennis scored his fifth U21 goal of the season while also providing his second assist – while Sharpe grabbed his fourth goal.
These performances against senior opposition will place these talents well for possible loan moves in January to challenge themselves outside of academy football.
In the game, there was also a debut for the U21s, with Godwill Kukonki as a second-half substitute making his bow.

Godwill Kukonki could be Ineos’ solution to Jarrad Branthwaite hunt
Kukonki was only promoted from the U16s last season, and has already been an U18 regular this season and at just 16 he already cuts a commanding figure in central defence – which has allowed him to already be making an emergence at U21 level.
Kukonki replaced Dan Gore in the 76th minute and a minute later United scored the winner. Kukonki then helped United see out the victory and didn’t put a foot wrong.
As a 16-year-old, playing in central defence against senior opposition is very impressive and shows that he is a potentially very special talent for United.
Kukonki has it all as a defender, boasting excellent physical qualities, and defensive IQ and also excels on the ball with his passing.
Being left-footed, if Kukonki can fulfil the potential we think he has then it could eliminate Ineos’ need to sign Jarrad Branthwaite, saving the club millions in the process.
United have so many talented players in the academy, yet centre-halves have been tricky to develop with no standout prospects, although Kukonki is one we will be watching closely over the next few years.
