Club president in personal talks to hire Ruben Amorim four months after Man Utd sacking

Ruben Amorim is yet to return to football since being sacked as Manchester United head coach but one club chief is trying to change that.

It has been over four months since Ruben Amorim was sacked following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

Amorim clashed with United chiefs before being dismissed. At the time, United were sixth in the Premier League table. Michael Carrick stepped in as interim and has led the Red Devils to third.

There has been no goodbye message from Amorim after his sacking, and there were reports that Amorim wanted to take a year out of management. However, one club president has stepped in to try and convince him.

Benfica president in talks with Ruben Amorim

According to Portuguese outlet Correio, Benfica president Rui Costa has personally taken over negotiations to try and convince Amorim to join the Portuguese club.

The report claims Amorim has already rejected an initial approach, which aligns with reports that he wants to take an extended break.

However, Costa is determined to bring the former United boss in to replace the outgoing Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is set to rejoin Real Madrid after going unbeaten with Benfica this season.

Because of Amorim’s connection to Benfica as a former player of the club, Costa is hoping to convince him emotionally to return to management.

Ruben Amorim is ahead of Marco Silva in Benfica order

Another option for Benfica is former United managerial candidate Marco Silva, who could leave Fulham this summer.

United considered Silva as an option before eventually appointing Amorim. Now, the two Portuguese coaches are the two favourites for the Benfica job.

However, it is Amorim who is preferred by Benfica chief Costa. But convincing the 41-year-old to return to management after his miserable stint at Old Trafford could prove difficult.

Meanwhile, United are preparing to announce Michael Carrick as the permanent head coach following his incredible interim spell.
