Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is set to complete a return to Real Madrid 13 years after leaving the Spanish giants.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted his iconic ‘Here we go’ confirmation for Jose Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid this week.

Mourinho has been unbeaten with Benfica in Portugal this season and he is now set to return to the top level of European management.

It has been eight years since Mourinho was sacked by United, but it seems he could call upon some of his Old Trafford links in the upcoming transfer window.

Jose Mourinho linked with two Man United stars

A major rebuild is needed at Real Madrid after reports of United target Aurelien Tchouameni fighting teammate Federico Valverde.

The Spanish giants have gone trophyless in 2025/26, and it is up to Mourinho to freshen up the squad.

According to a report from OK Diario, Marcus Rashford could be of interest to Mourinho at Madrid after he worked with the English forward at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford has excelled at Barcelona this season, and he even scored against Madrid to clinch the La Liga title.

His loan deal at Camp Nou expires this summer and Barcelona don’t want to pay £26m for Rashford. An Old Trafford return seems very unlikely, so one option could be to reunite with Mourinho at the Bernabeu.

Back in late 2024 there were reports that Real Madrid were weighing up a £50m bid for Diogo Dalot as a right-back option.

Instead, Madrid swooped for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the former Liverpool defender is already falling down the pecking order at the Bernabeu.

Mourinho once tipped Dalot to emulate Gary Neville and be United’s right-back over a 10-year period. Diogo Dalot has now been at Old Trafford for eight years.

“He is probably the same age as Gary Neville when he came into the first team,” Mourinho said when Dalot was signed. “Probably he can follow Neville in this dynamic of more than 10 years as United’s right-back, with amazing conditions to improve, because as I was saying he’s 19 years old.”

It is known that Mourinho is a big admirer of Dalot, so his return to Madrid could reignite transfer rumours over the Portuguese star.
