Marcus Rashford was a player in demand this summer after it became clear he would be leaving Manchester United.

When Ruben Amorim froze Marcus Rashford out at Manchester United, it became increasingly clear that his career at Old Trafford was over.

For the second half of last season, Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan, but the Premier League side chose not to trigger a £40 million buy option this summer.

Instead, Rashford signed for Barcelona on loan with a buy clause attached to the deal for next summer.

Rashford starred in the Champions League for Barcelona to continue what has been a bright start for the Carrington graduate in Spain.

Aston Villa president quits after Marcus Rashford failure

Unai Emery was a big admirer of Rashford during their time together at Villa Park, but their financial issues meant that a £40m deal was simply not possible this summer.

Villa walked away from a permanent deal, much to the disappointment of club president Monchi.

According to talkSPORT, Monchi wanted more financial support in the summer to complete a permanent deal for Rashford, but Villa’s PSR position made that impossible.

It was confirmed on Monday that Monchi, who was the President of Football Operations at Villa, has now left the club following their poor start to the season.

Monchi spent just over two years at Villa having previously worked at Sevilla and Roma in similar roles.

Monchi also played key role in Jadon Sancho deal

Rashford is certainly not the only transfer business struck between Villa and United recently.

This summer, Jadon Sancho joined Aston Villa on loan for the 2025/26 season after falling out at Old Trafford.

United fans were delighted to see Sancho leave, and he has struggled to make an impact at Villa Park since completing his summer move.

There were also talks over Emiliano Martinez in the summer, with United considering the Villa shot-stopper as an option before eventually choosing to sign Senne Lammens.

Monchi was still in charge of Villa’s transfer business at this time, and would have played a key role in the talks for both Sancho and Martinez over the summer.
