Bryan Mbeumo set to be reunited with the man who tried to scupper his dream Manchester United move

Bryan Mbeumo has hit the ground running at Manchester United but his move to Old Trafford was anything but simple.

After signing Matheus Cunha on the opening day of the summer transfer window, Manchester United shifted their focus to signing Bryan Mbeumo and the saga that followed was unnecessarily drawn out.

Brentford kept changing Mbeumo’s price tag, with United eventually settling for a £65m deal after the Premier League side at one point demanded as much as £80m.

The forward’s attitude throughout the saga was spotless. It was made extremely clear that Mbeumo only wanted to join United despite interest from others.

That includes interest from his former Brentford boss – and now Tottenham manager – Thomas Frank.

When the move was complete, Mbeumo said joining United was his ‘dream’. In order to achieve that dream, he rejected an approach from Frank.

Frank wanted to hijack Mbeumo’s move and bring him to Tottenham having just been appointed as their new manager.

This Saturday, United travel to North London to face Tottenham and Mbeumo will be reunited with his former manager.

Mbeumo is currently United’s top goalscorer, and he will hope to continue his scoring streak against Frank’s new side this weekend.

Despite Mbeumo being a huge admirer of Frank from their time together at Brentford, a move to United was something he was not willing to give up.

Thomas Frank said Bryan Mbeumo ‘deserves’ Man Utd move

Mbeumo spent five years playing under Frank at Brentford. The Cameroon international now ranks third on Brentford’s all-time top goalscorer list.

The 26-year-old became a Premier League star under Frank’s tutelage, but he will hope to leave him tasting defeat this weekend.

When asked about Mbeumo’s move to United this summer, Frank spoke positively about his former forward.

As quoted by The Metro, Frank said: “Bryan, of course, is a fantastic player,

“I have been with him for five years. I think he deserved the move, no matter where he goes.

“As a player I wish him all the best when you’ve been with a player for so long.”
