It has been four and a half years since Manchester United made the decision to sell Angel Gomes.
It is likely a decision that the club looks back on regrettably with the now 24-year-old midfielder turning into a top talent at Ligue 1 club Lille.
Angel Gomes pushed to break through under Jose Mourinho but was unable to work his way into the Portuguese’s first-team plans.
The talented midfielder made his senior debut in 2017 aged 16 years, 8 months, 20 days, making Angel Gomes one of United’s youngest ever players.
However, he wasn’t able to cement himself in the first team and was released by United in the summer of 2020 after rejecting the club’s contract offer.
Gomes signed a five-year deal with Lille shortly after, and that contract is set to expire in the summer meaning he is free to talk to clubs about a move this month.

Angel Gomes is open to Man United return
With just six months remaining on his Lille deal, French outlet L’Equipe reported in October that there are “no signs” of Gomes signing a new contract.
Gomes is open to returning to United and, with the Red Devils struggling financially, he represents a good-value deal as a free agent.
While Gomes didn’t get on with Mourinho, there is now a new – much more likeable – Portuguese coach at Carrington. Reports so far suggest Ruben Amorim wants to re-sign Gomes at United.
United lack depth in midfield, especially with Casemiro linked with a January exit. Toby Collyer could also leave on loan, which would leave Amorim dangerously short of options.
Gomes would prefer to join United than other Premier League clubs which puts Amorim in pole position to land him on a free transfer. To ramp up speculation, Gomes has now been spotted in Manchester training with a former teammate.
Angel Gomes and Jesse Lingard train in Manchester
Gomes was an unused substitute in Lille’s latest 1-1 draw with Nantes, and it seems he has spent part of his winter back in England training with former United teammate Jesse Lingard.
A video posted to social media by RH Elite Coaching – who has already trained with United duo Marcus Rashford and Chido Obi this season – shows Gomes and Lingard training together in Manchester at Ashton United’s ground.
It is unclear when the training session took place but the video was uploaded on Tuesday, January 7th.
Gomes could be back in action for Lille on Friday when they face Auxerre in Ligue 1.
