Angel Gomes has been pictured training with new club Lille for the first time since his Manchester United exit.
Last summer Gomes turned down United’s offer of a contract extension and signed with Lille.
Gomes was immediately sent out on a season long loan to Boavista.
While this seemed peculiar at the time because Gomes could potentially have signed a United deal and then gone out on loan, the player’s plan is now coming to fruition.
Now Gomes is training with the French champions after Lille’s surprise 2020/21 title win and hopes to be part of their squad for the upcoming season.
New start
The next chapter of Gomes’ career begins now and it could not have worked out more perfectly.
Lille will be playing Champions League football next season and Gomes could be part of it.
The team’s Ligue 1 success has seen clubs across Europe begin to raid them for talent. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan has left for AC Milan and Boubakary Soumare has been sold to Leicester.
Sven Botman and Renato Sanches are two more players who they will be under increased pressure to sell this summer too as clubs eye them up.
This could all work out well for Gomes, as a depleted Lille squad opens up new opportunities for him to make his mark.
Gomes scored six goals and provided three assists on loan at Boavista last season, who finished 13th in Portugal. He started 29 games, so it was a productive developmental year.
He will hope he can impress in pre-season at Lille rather than going out on loan again, and while it could take a couple of seasons for him to get up to speed, it might be that in a couple of years time, Gomes is the player who could be attracting bids from other clubs.
For now this is his time to shine, and turn all the wonderkid talk into star player. His fans have been waiting long enough.
