Manchester United have signed Youri Tielemans to continue their midfield rebuild and a false narrative is building around his athleticism and running power.
A surprise £35 million deal for Youri Tielemans was struck by Manchester United this week, with the Red Devils triggering his release clause at Aston Villa.
Tielemans is achieving a childhood dream by joining United, and he will add some much-needed experience and passing quality to Michael Carrick’s midfield department.
United now need a third midfield arrival to complete their rebuild, and fans want an athletic duel-winner to add balance to the Tielemans and Andrey Santos signings.
But many are undervaluing how much of a powerful runner Tielemans actually is.

Man Utd are set to sign YOURI TIELEMANS from Aston Villa? What is your REACTION?
How much is Youri Tielemans worth? How would he fit in?
Youri Tielemans’ running stats are underrated
Tielemans stands at 5ft 9in and is similar in frame to United captain Bruno Fernandes. But like the Portuguese playmaker, he still has an impressive ability to cover ground and do his defensive work.
At the 2026 World Cup, Tielemans’ FIFA stats tell the story of an all-action midfielder.
- 6th overall for High Intensity Runs
- 19th overall for Total Distance Covered
- 14th overall for Explosive Sprints
For extra context, in his five World Cup appearances, Tielemans made 862 high-intensity runs, 256 sprints and covered a total of 61,813 metres.
Considering that Tielemans was out injured for Belgium’s final game of the tournament – a 2-1 defeat to Spain – it makes his running stats even more impressive compared to others who have played more minutes.
Tielemans’ running stats also shine in the Premier League. In 2024, as per BBC Sport, he covered more ground than any other Aston Villa player.
As per Opta, only Bruno Guimaraes and Tomas Soucek had covered more ground than Tielemans by March in that season. Tielemans was just above Fernandes for his total distance covered.
Even in terms of his top speed, Tielemans ranks highly in the Premier League. As per FotMob, Tielemans is ranked as the sixth-fastest midfielder in the top flight with a top speed of 32.2km/h.
Casemiro’s top speed clocked last season was 29.5km/h, so Tielemans is a major upgrade on the Brazilian in midfield.
- Top speed: 32.2km/h

Which midfielder do you think would fit United's rebuild best? What do we need next?
Man United fans should not be worried about Youri Tielemans’ athleticism
Tielemans’ style of play is very much a technical passer in midfield, but fans should not overlook his athletic stats either.
Much like Fernandes, who covers a freakish amount of ground each game and plays almost every match, Tielemans does not shy away from his off-the-ball duties.
There is some concern about Tielemans’ injury record ahead of his move to United, but the Belgian star does average around 40 matches per season.
Even in 2025/26, when he missed a large portion of the campaign through injury, Tielemans made 35 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa.
United are getting a player in his physical prime, and Tielemans will prove many people wrong about his athleticism and running power.
