Ally McCoist claims Bryan Mbeumo has already done something at Man United that Rasmus Hojlund never could

Rasmus Hojlund left Manchester United this summer to make space for an attacking overhaul that included Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Last season, Rasmus Hojlund only scored four Premier League goals for Manchester United in what was a disastrous 2024/25 campaign.

Despite his struggles, Hojlund wanted to stay and fight for his position under Ruben Amorim this season. Ultimately, it was decided that he would leave and a loan move to Napoli quickly followed.

Benjamin Sesko has been an upgrade on Hojlund, but the big talking point at Old Trafford is the immediate success of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Mbeumo, in particular, has already matched Hojlund’s goal tally from last season.

Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha compared to Rasmus Hojlund

Amorim wanted proven Premier League signings in the summer, so Ineos went and brought in both Mbeumo and Cunha from Brentford and Wolves.

Mbeumo and Cunha have been instant hits for United, with both summer arrivals hitting the ground running.

Speaking to talkSPORT, McCoist believes both Mbeumo and Cunha can handle the United spotlight while Hojlund struggled to cope.

“Cunha has made a difference, Mbeumo has definitely made a difference. Sesko to a lesser degree,” McCoist said.

“But the most important thing about the two I’ve mentioned is that they look as though they can handle it. They look as though they can handle playing for United.

“Hojlund has left and I wish him all the very best, and I think he will go on to score goals, as he is doing. But he looked as though he couldn’t handle it. Those two I mentioned look as though they can.”

Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were ready for Man United

Ineos have preferred to sign exciting young players who can develop into superstars. The slight difference with Cunha and Mbeumo is that they were already established in the Premier League.

Both Cunha and Mbeumo are 26 years old, and have made the move to Old Trafford in the peak of their careers. They arrived hungry and ready to elevate to new levels.

United’s £72m deal for Hojlund brought the Dane to Manchester when he was just 21 years old and still adapting to first-team football.

Sesko will face the same hurdles that Hojlund did at United, but he has much better support around him in the shape of Cunha, Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes.
