Solskjaer offers update on Varane and Sancho after United thrash Everton

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has offered an update on Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Neither of Manchester United’s two biggest summer signings played as Everton were thrashed 4-0 at Old Trafford.

That means they won’t have any friendlies to get up to speed but Solskjaer told the club website Sancho will train on Monday.

As for Varane, he’s still isolating and Solskjaer said the process has taken longer than expected.

“Of course the medical with Raphael has to be done,” Solskjaer said. “He’s isolating at the moment, he had to wait for visas.

“So unfortunately that took a few more days than expected but we’re gonna follow the protocols and the rules so it’s took a few more days than we hoped for.

“Jadon is in for Monday and hopefully then he’s in decent nick and can be involved.

“It’s a big week,” he added. “It has to be some work specific to Leeds but we still need some more fitness. Hopefully, we’ll get Raphael and Jadon in with the group.

“That’s important for us, when you sign two players like that, that you get them in.”

Both players were active on social media during the game. Sancho reacted to Bruno Fernandes’ stunning free-kick, while Varane posted a photo of him watching his new teammates.

How will it affect Sancho and Varane?

It’s not ideal for neither player not to play a pre-season friendly.

But both Sancho and Varane played at Euro 2020, so they were keeping match fit over the summer.

Sancho’s adjustment should be very smooth; he knows many of the United squad from England duty and has lived in Manchester before.

Varane has never played in England and might take more time to adapt – time will tell.

But he’s in the country now, just waiting to end his isolation and get underway at United.

Solskjaer’s men showed themselves capable of winning well without them today and they’ll likely need to do the same against Leeds a week today.
