Five things learned as Manchester United lose 2-0 to West Ham

Manchester United’s terrible Premier League form continued with a 2-0 defeat to West Ham at Old Trafford.

Goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen were enough to give West Ham all three points from their trip to Manchester.

Manchester United have now gone seven straight Premier League games without a win, with Ruben Amorim admitting himself that full focus is on the Europa League – and has been for some time now.

But the performance against West Ham was nowhere near good enough, with United struggling to create chances despite dominating possession.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s return to Old Trafford

As part of the Ineos clearout last summer, Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sold for £15m to West Ham and was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.

United fans are very familiar with Wan-Bissaka’s defensive capabilities and, frustratingly, he was able to keep Amad Diallo quiet on his flank. Going forward, he played a key role in both goals, including an assist for Jarrod Bowen in the second half.

Wan-Bissaka has “dominated” this season since joining the Hammers, and United might be regretting letting the 27-year-old leave – especially for such a small fee.

Leny Yoro now a doubt for the final

Just minutes into the second half, Leny Yoro went down holding his foot.

He was replaced by Harry Maguire for the remaining 40 minutes and Yoro was pictured walking straight down the Old Trafford tunnel.

With the Europa League final on the horizon, Amorim needs his best players fit. Yoro was “world class” against Athletic Club in the semi-final, and if he is ruled out of the Bilbao showpiece it would be a huge blow.

Matthijs de Ligt could also miss the final, meaning United could be without two of their star centre-backs against Tottenham.

Europa League hangover… again

Once again, United enjoyed a wonderful performance in Europe but followed it up with a disappointing display in the Premier League.

Amorim has explained why United struggle in the league, but Sunday’s defeat means the Red Devils have now gone seven league games without a win.

Regardless of whether United win the Europa League or not, that’s not exactly how Amorim would want to end the league campaign ahead of 2025/26.

Rasmus Hojlund injury scare

There are just 10 days remaining until the Europa League final and Rasmus Hojlund is the only striker fit and eligible for that match.

It explains why Old Trafford held its breath when Hojlund went down clutching his shoulder in the first half – an injury to the Dane would require Amorim to re-think his game plan for the final.

Hojlund had another poor display against West Ham, but thankfully he seemed to shake off his injury.

Man United break 18-year streak vs West Ham

Before Sunday’s defeat, Manchester United had not lost to West Ham at Old Trafford for 18 years.

Their last victory at Old Trafford came at the end of the 2006/07 season when Carlos Tevez scored the winner for the Hammers.

The Argentine striker would later make a move to join Sir Alex Ferguson at the Theatre of Dreams.
