Manchester United can still lift silverware despite enduring a turbulent season.

With four games left to play in the Premier League, Manchester United know they must win the Europa League to secure qualification for the Champions League.

That is all Ruben Amorim’s side has to play for in the closing weeks of the 2024/25 campaign.

United are 14^th in the Premier League and could finish as low as 17^th, but they remain the only unbeaten team in the second-tier European competition after a dramatic quarter-final tie with Lyon.

The Red Devils are currently preparing to take on Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-finals, with the first leg taking place on Thursday night in Spain. If they can beat the La Liga side over two legs, they will reach the final against either Tottenham or Bodo/Glimt.

However, it’s debatable whether winning the Europa League would salvage United’s season.

Especially after United fans have been subjected to poor results, lacklustre performances and a change of team management over the season.

Bruno Fernandes gives honest verdict on Manchester United this season

As United’s most influential player, Bruno Fernandes’ comments carry weight.

The Portugal international remains United’s best player and is on course to win the club’s Player of the Year award.

But Fernandes has warned that victory in Europe will not paper over the cracks of what has been a hugely disappointing campaign, although it doesn’t make him less determined to win the Europa League because he’s hungry for trophies.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s game, Fernandes said, as cited by the Daily Mail: “I wouldn’t say it’s a reward, I think it will just be successful in terms of the Europa League.

“It’s very important to do that, to get the silverware this season. But it won’t save anything.”

United could win their third trophy in as many seasons if they go all the way in the Europa League, but players like Fernandes will want to see our Premier League form improve next season onwards.

Fernandes warns teammates about Athletic Club

Winning the Europa League would put a positive spin on the 2024/25 season, but it won’t save anything as United endured their worst campaign in Premier League history.

Fernandes has warned his United teammates about Athletic Club’s objective to win the Europa League as the final will be held in their stadium.

United will play at San Mames stadium on Thursday night and Fernandes has warned it will be ‘tough’.

“They have the final at home if they beat us, so it will be really tough,” he added.

“You have to be prepared.”

United are set to be without Diogo Dalot for the first leg against Athletic Club, while Amad Diallo continues his recovery.

Amorim will speak to the press on Wednesday and is expected to give an update on his team.
