Diogo Dalot has broken his silence over the setback involving Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in Sunday evening’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Manuel Ugarte was brought into the Red Devils’ midfield after Casemiro was ruled out due to suspension and Kobbie Mainoo was out of action with an injury.

United fans watched on at Villa Park – and around the world – as one of the worst possible outcomes involving Fernandes could have occurred on Sunday evening.

Fernandes pulled up with an injury late in the first half and the 31-year-old United captain did everything in his power to see himself reach the half-time whistle.

Bruno Fernandes was unable to continue playing after the break and Ruben Amorim withdrew the midfielder from Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Lisandro Martinez was brought into the United midfield in place of Fernandes, who has impressed over the course of his Old Trafford spell due to his lack of injuries.

Speaking after United’s defeat to Villa on the weekend, Diogo Dalot refused to downplay the impact of his side losing his Portugal teammate in the match.

The 26-year-old United right-back admitted it must have been a serious injury for the resilient Fernandes to come off the pitch at Villa Park in the Premier League tie.

“It’s massive [losing Fernandes],” he told Sky Sports, as per BBC Sport.

“We don’t know how bad it is, but for him to come off, we know how tough he is.

“Hopefully, it’s not too bad and we keep with him for the next games.”

Dalot has insisted that United must plan ahead for the rest of their busy December schedule, irrespective of the extent of Fernandes’ absence from the first team.

The Portugal international believes that there is now a chance for some players to prove their worth to the Red Devils after Fernandes’ injury setback against Villa.

“This is the time that opportunities come for other players and the time you step up and show you deserve to be in the team and play more minutes,” Dalot added.

“I think that’s how the players who get opportunities should look at it.

“We are Manchester United and we have to find a way to win.”

United’s result against Aston Villa on Sunday evening has left the Red Devils in seventh place in the Premier League table and three points off from the top four.
