Villa delivered the first blow of the Premier League contest on the cusp of half-time, with Morgan Rogers curling a sensational strike past United No 1 Senne Lammens.
Leny Yoro allowed Morgan Rogers to cut inside from the left side of the United box and the Villa ace planted his superb long-range effort into the far corner of the net.
However, United hit back only minutes later in first-half injury-time through Matheus Cunha, who curled a stunning shot past Villa’s Emiliano Martinez from a tight angle.
Patrick Dorgu caught Matty Cash out while he was dawdling on the ball and the United wing-back’s tackle pushed the ball into the path of an unmarked Cunha.
United and Villa went into half-time with the scores level at 1-1 before Unai Emery’s men restored their lead in the second half thanks to the impact of Rogers again.
Leny Yoro switched off again and allowed Rogers space inside the United box, with the 23-year-old Villa winger curling another fantastic strike past Senne Lammens.
