United linked to young talent Toby Savin

Manchester United are being linked with a move for promising Accrington goalkeeper Toby Savin.

The Sun report United goalkeeping talent spotter Tony Coton has gone to personally scout Savin in action.

Savin, 20, is a regular in League One for Accrington Stanley, making 24 appearances already this season.

It is not easy for a young goalkeeper to excel in the often physical Football League. Savin is showing promise.

Where might he fit in?

United will let a number of goalkeepers leave the club this summer.

Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira, and Paul Woolston are all at the end of their contracts and will be released.

Lee Grant could also retire and stay on solely as a coach, although no decision has been taken.

Matek Kovar will likely head out on loan again, while Nathan Bishop is also a probable candidate to go on loan.

And then there is the David de Gea and Dean Henderson dilemma. It is very possible De Gea will be sold to raise funds.

Add all of that together and it is understandable why United may look for one more young, talented goalkeeper who can add depth.

Should United take a punt?

Savin has made a total of 26 appearances at first team level. It’s good early experience for the youngster to be picking up in League One, a level where United sent Kovar out on loan to this season.

Earlier in the season Savin kept five consecutive clean sheets. This was the first time Accrington Stanley had done so for 21 years.

The youngster’s manager John Coleman told the Lancashire Telegraph: “Toby Savin has pulled off another unbelievable save at the end and it will be hard for us to keep hold of him.”

It’s unlikely the youngster would cost a lot either. There’s a stronger case to sign a talented prospect like Savin as a back-up than another veteran, and he could develop into a player who, in the future, goes on to put Dean Henderson under pressure.
