Jacob Devaney is among the outstanding midfield talents right now at Manchester United, and this coming campaign could be his breakout at Old Trafford.
Fresh off a strong loan campaign for St Mirren in Scotland, Jacob Devaney should be back at Carrington when Manchester United start pre-season on July 7th.
Devaney was brilliant for the Scottish Premiership side, nailing down a starting line-up position and making himself undeniable for United this summer as he looks to prove his readiness.
The opportunity will be there this summer for Devaney to achieve his target of contributing to the first team for the 2026/27 season.
But what are the demands he will need to pass to get this role?

Jacob Devaney has excellent chance in Manchester United midfield
There will be a golden opportunity for Devaney next month, as United are without a senior midfielder initially aside from Mason Mount.
Ederson’s late arrival has meant Michael Carrick will absolutely need to rely on Devaney.
Come July 18th, Devaney could even start against Wrexham, and here is where he will begin his efforts to make the role his own.
Which Manchester United academy midfielder should be in the first-team next season?
Who is the biggest talent right now?
In this game, Carrick will be looking out for the intensity Devaney can show, the maturity of his play, whether he can technically stack up against good Championship opposition.
For those unaware, Devaney ticks each of these boxes.
Likely to be alongside Mount, Devaney will be the more defensive of the two, so he will have to cover a lot of ground, work hard in the duel and show that he is capable of being an option.
Devaney has similarities to Elliot Anderson, which already starts him off on a good footing to potentially impress Carrick, ticking the boxes stylistically.
Only just turned 19 this month, this season would be the perfect time for Devaney to be trusted and integrated into the new midfield department as one of the four or five to be used across four competitions.
Which youngster are you MOST excited to watch during pre-season?
With the World Cup this summer, pre-season will have plenty of academy involvement🔮
The stars have aligned for Devaney
While talent plays a huge part in which youth players step into the first-team every season, so does chance and opportunity.
For Devaney, this summer has seen the stars align.
Casemiro has left United, while both Kobbie Mainoo and likely departee Manuel Ugarte are both at the World Cup.
Ederson getting the Brazil call-up means he won’t start pre-season, while other midfield targets are yet to come to fruition.
This places a reliance on the academy and Tyler Fletcher’s inclusion for Scotland could mean that Devaney is the one best placed and gets the first opportunity.
Now, he just needs to take it.
