Manchester United’s U21 side rounded out the National League Cup group stage on Wednesday night.

The game saw Travis Binnion handed the chance to end the group stage with a 100 per cent winning record and the U21 head coach happily obliged.

Manchester United’s academy side headed on the short journey to Oldham, and will be thrilled with the outcome of the game.

On a fruitful evening for Manchester United’s academy U21 team, the goalscoring was opened by Jack Moorhouse as he continued to impress with a brilliant outing.

Chido Obi scored the second of the night, while Malachi Sharpe grabbed the third. A fourth came via Sam Mather before the scoring was concluded by Victor Musa.

United won the game 5-0 at Boundary Park, and arguably it was Obi who was the biggest standout.

Chido Obi dominates against Oldham in National League Cup

This month has seen Obi promoted to become the full-time U21 striker – with Ethan Wheatley on loan and also Gabriele Biancheri injured.

This has resulted in Obi scoring his first U21 goal for United against Nordsjaelland – a goal which has now been added to against Oldham.

Obi scored a real striker’s goal but he should have grabbed a couple.

However, the most exciting part of his performance was his hold-up play and link-up play which has evolved drastically since his arrival at United.

Obi was dropping deep to receive the ball at times, before turning and playing passes to Moorhouse and Co. who were beyond him.

This display is very exciting and United fans have reacted as such on social media.

Manchester United fans rave about Obi performance

After how impressive Obi was on Wednesday night, United fans had plenty to say about him on X.

One fan wrote: “Chido Obi is too good for academy level. He needs to be promoted to the first team”.

A second fan of United commented: “Chido Obi is even better than I thought. This is a special footballer.”

Another fan claimed: “I genuinely feel Chido Obi is better than Hojlund and Zirkzee”.

A fourth fan was simply in awe and compared him with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak: “Chido Obi… when you lot see this comp tell me you don’t see ISAK. Omds. Long limbs but moves like he’s 5’10. The ball striking. Drops deep. Runs in behind. Quick spins. Moved.”

“Stature-wise, Chido Obi holds up versus pretty much every defender he faces. Should help his transition into men’s game”, wrote a further fan.

A final fan lauded Obi’s technical ability: “He’s got good technical ability and fundamentals with nimble feet in tight areas.”
