Young Manchester United talent Iestyn Hughes has decided to join Leicester City.

Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic reported the news over the weekend, disclosing that Hughes has signed a three-year deal at the club.

The Athletic had reported in February that top flight clubs were looking at Hughes, who was out of contract this summer.

The defender’s mum confirmed the switch on Twitter, saying the family were proud of his next step.

A talent who United may regret losing

Hughes, 18, is a Wales youth international who has featured in under-17 and under-19 squads for his country.

The young defender plays at right-back and has been a regular for United’s under-18 side this season, playing in 14 games.

He went on trial with Leicester in late March and played 90 minutes for their under-23 side against West Ham.

The teenager is a bright talent, and The Athletic reported there was interest from German teams too.

But the right-back position is a very crowded one at United, and there was little immediate opportunity of him breaking through.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is United’s top option, and while Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams can both play there too, Ethan Laird is hoping to breakthrough as an option soon.

United also signed Marc Jurado from Barcelona last summer, who has been splitting time in the under-18s at the position with Hughes, and earlier this month he made his under-23s debut.

Hughes is joining a good club in Leicester, and has a chance to make United regret letting him go. At the same time, United are well covered at the position.
