There are only two Manchester United stars in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup but Shea Lacey will have his eyes on the squad for the 2028 Euros.

Thomas Tuchel decided to call up Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford to the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

United teammates Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Mason Mount were all left at home for the tournament.

Academy star Shea Lacey made his first-team breakthrough in the 2025/26 season, and it won’t be long until he is also in the conversations for a Three Lions call-up.

Shea Lacey can follow Kobbie Mainoo blueprint

When Mainoo made his United breakthrough, his rise was so meteoric that he was immediately considered for an England call-up.

Mainoo took Euro 2024 by storm and became the youngest England player to feature in a major final when he started against Spain.

He has made himself a shining example for all Carrington graduates to follow, and Lacey can use Mainoo’s rise as inspiration to force his way into the England squad.

The United Kingdom and Ireland will host the 2028 Euros, although Old Trafford is not a host stadium for the tournament.

But the tournament is a great target for Lacey to aim for, and there are already some factors in his favour.

Shea Lacey can take advantage of England’s poor depth

Tuchel had the extremely difficult job of picking just 26 players to take in the England squad to the World Cup, but one of the easiest positions to decide was on the right wing.

Bukayo Saka is England’s starting winger on the right, but there is a startling lack of competition behind him.

Noni Madueke was called up and started in place of an injured Saka in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia in the World Cup.

But Lacey will look at the lack of options on England’s right wing and lick his lips. If the teenage sensation can continue his promising development under Michael Carrick over the next two seasons, he could give himself a platform to become an England star.
