How Ayden Heaven fared on Man Utd U21 debut, shows one quality Ruben Amorim will love

Despite being a first-team addition, Ayden Heaven’s bow in the red of Manchester United came for the U21s.

One of two players to arrive in the January transfer window, Ayden Heaven looks primed to play a big role for Manchester United in the coming years.

It was a move which cost United £1.5m in compensation as Heaven followed Chido Obi from Arsenal to Carrington. The 18-year-old was highly rated at Arsenal, yet with his chances limited he opted to join United – amid interest from Eintracht Frankfurt and Barcelona.

Upon the deal being announced, United technical director Jason Wilcox praised Heaven’s ‘excellent potential’ while also labelling the teenager an ‘extremely talented defender’. The England U19 international was also defined as a signing for the first-team.

Ayden Heaven makes Manchester United U21 debut

After sitting on the United bench for the past two first-team games, now fans have gotten a glimpse of Heaven. The teenager started on the left of a back two for Travis Binnion’s U21 side on Monday night for the Premier League 2 clash with Fulham.

Heaven was alongside U18 regular Reece Munro and both were impressive throughout the first-half, not giving Fulham much in an attacking sense.

It seemed pre-determined that Heaven would only play the opening 45 minutes and in this time he barely put a foot wrong. Heaven’s quality on the ball quickly shone through as he completed all of his passes in the half, bar one.

While he is far from the finished product, he did already look very impressive at U21 level as he dealt rather easily with the threat Fulham were presenting. There was one worrying moment when a Fulham attacker knocked it around Heaven and retained possession as the United No.26 made little effort to win the ball.

Heaven’s size was also noticeable as he made his opponents look tiny, however, he does appear to be lacking a bit of physicality – Munro was more dominant in duels – which will come with time.

It looks pretty obvious right now that Heaven is a midfielder, converted into a defender, with his biggest weaknesses being out of possession, but there are things which Amorim must now work on in training with Heaven.

All in all, Heaven appears to have a skillset far more befitting a back three than a back two, which could benefit him in his bid to join his friend Obi as a first-team debutant.

Heaven’s quality which Ruben Amorim needs

Ruben Amorim is in the midst of a real injury crisis right now, and in true United fashion, he has reached into the academy to find solutions. Heaven is not an academy graduate as he joined at age 18, yet his usage would follow a similar youth-orientated path.

One of Amorim’s big injury problems is Lisandro Martinez faces most of 2025 out after he suffered a torn cruciate ligament. The Argentine has already had surgery on the issue, but his absence leaves United without a left-footed centre-back unless Heaven steps up.

Well, after seeing Heaven in action he could offer qualities similar to ‘The Butcher’ in terms of his passing at least.

Heaven was comfortable playing simple passes, and also breaking lines with his passes which is something lacking in the absence of Martinez. Obviously, the quality level differences are staggering right now – but it is the best United have to find those passing angles.

Heaven has a big role to play during the remainder of this season.
