Harry Amass sends statement to Ruben Amorim with U18 performance – one of Man Utd’s best

Manchester United’s U18 side were back in action on Friday night as the FA Youth Cup continued.

After a comfortable 5-0 third-round win over Coventry, it was time for the fourth round after a month-long hiatus from academy playing.

Manchester United U18, however, looked as impressive as ever to defeat Preston 5-2 at the Leigh Sports Village.

Chido Obi undeniably stole the show on the night, scoring twice and playing a major part in other goals. However for United, beyond the goals, Obi’s development on the ball will be pleasing.

Amir Ibragimov continued his impressive season as he emerged from the bench to score the fifth with an expertly weighted panenka penalty past the Preston shot-stopper.

However, there was one less obvious impressive performance.

Harry Amass’ physicality is improving after Erik ten Hag concerns

While the free-flying attackers within the academy ranks often steal the headlines for their relentless goal-scoring rate – it is important to note there are other impressive displays.

Jack Fletcher was back at his best – while Harry Amass impressed as a left-back.

Amass once again looked levels too good for youth football and dominated his opponents in this 5-2 win.

Most impressively for MEN journalist Steven Railston was that Amass’ physicality was clearly improving as he “won a big header” and looked “incredibly comfortable” in the first half.

“United have prepared him for a loan this month and he’s starting to look like a man. Has physically improved and filled out.”

Going into this season, first-team football looked on the cards for Amass. However, Erik ten Hag deemed Amass not physically ready – something the 17-year-old has been working on.

Now, with dominant youth performances every time he plays – Amass desperately needs one of two things.

Manchester United’s Amass sends Ruben Amorim a statement

After a turbulent December period, Ruben Amorim seems to be implementing his style and improving – with three games unbeaten including results against Liverpool and Arsenal.

It was always going to be a long haul to see this United side return to the top – but the vision is there with Amorim and as his side becomes settled, we anticipate youth integration will be next on his agenda.

Toby Collyer has already made the step this month – instantly earning Amorim’s trust – and with another impressive display, the head coach is surely considering Amass for promotion.

The former Watford prospect has shown enough to warrant faith from Amorim – however with January already half over, a decision must be made over Amass’ possible loan for the rest of the season.

If Amorim is not planning to use Amass then a loan to League One or Championship must be sorted immediately to help his development – which could stall if remaining in youth football for the next six months.
