Manchester United are set for a huge task against Athletic Club as Ruben Amorim chases Europa League glory.

Here we go; Manchester United’s first date with Europa League destiny is here.

United take on Athletic Club in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday evening, with Ruben Amorim taking his side over to Bilbao.

Amorim will hope this isn’t his only trip to Bilbao, as the Europa League final will be held there in May.

Qualification for the Champions League would be an enormous boost for United, especially with a huge transfer window looming large.

Amorim needs major reinforcements and United are already closing in on signing Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Matt Doherty on Manchester United target Matheus Cunha

Cunha has a £62.5million release clause in his Wolves contract and looks set for a move to Old Trafford.

Paul Scholes has doubts about Cunha to United, questioning just where he would play under Amorim.

We believe the Brazilian will be deployed as a number 10, offering flair and trickery Amorim’s 3-4-2-1.

A deal certainly appears to be moving forward rapidly, though may not be completely rubber-stamped for a while.

Wolves ace Matt Doherty has now heaped praise on Cunha, whilst speaking to Sky Sports.

Doherty suggested that Cunha should still be playing for Atletico Madrid, but may have needed to leave the club in order to find himself.

Doherty added a firm prediction, believing that Cunha will soon be playing at the ‘highest level imaginable’.

The Irishman feels Champions League football awaits for Cunha, adding that he has ‘huge potential’.

“Sometimes it takes you to move away from a place to find yourself, to realise what you need to do, because he should be playing week in and week out for them, Atletico Madrid,” said Doherty.

“For whatever reason, that’s not the case but I’m pretty sure that he’s going to be playing at the highest level imaginable; Champions League, stuff like that, pretty soon. Huge potential,” he added.

Matheus Cunha stance on Champions League

Whether Cunha plays Champions League football as soon as next season is still unclear.

United could have that pathway on offer if Amorim can get past Bilbao and then either Tottenham Hotspur or Bodo/Glimt in the final.

Fortunately, Cunha doesn’t appear to be basing his transfer decision on the Champions League.

Reports suggest Cunha is not put off by United’s Champions League uncertainty.

The Brazilian allegedly wants to sign for United regardless of the European fate, showing that there is still some real pulling power at Old Trafford.

United would view Cunha as a player who can help take the club back to Europe’s top table, and he will be keen to fulfil Doherty’s prediction at some stage in the very near future.
