What Dan Ashworth said after selling Manchester United target Viktor Gyokeres for just £1m, he was right all along

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim will be attempting to learn as much about his players as possible ahead of the January transfer window.

A new era is upon us at Manchester United and we are now just days away from Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge.

United announced Amorim as the new head coach on 1 November but allowed him to continue coaching Sporting until the international break.

Amorim has now arrived at Old Trafford and fans are eagerly anticipating his debut against Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon.

The international break means that Amorim hasn’t yet been able to meet some of his players yet and January signings surely won’t be at the forefront of his mind just yet.

Dan Ashworth past comments on Viktor Gyokeres

Speculation continues to emerge though and it’s no surprise to see that Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres has been mentioned.

United fans have fallen in love with Gyokeres, who has been nothing short of a goal machine under Amorim at Sporting.

The Swede has hit 66 goals in 68 games under Amorim and many believe that he can be the answer to United’s attacking concerns.

Dimitar Berbatov wants United to sign Gyokeres but any deal would see Dan Ashworth commit big funds to sign a striker he actually sold.

Gyokeres has become a hot commodity at Sporting but it’s often forgotten that he has actually already been with a Premier League club.

The 26-year-old left Brommapojkarna in his native Sweden in order to join Brighton and Hove Albion in 2018.

Gyokeres was never given a Premier League opportunity though and was sold to Coventry City back in 2021, with the Seagulls bringing in just £1million for him (The Argus).

Upon selling Gyokeres, Ashworth explained that he felt joining the Sky Blues was a ‘good move’ for Gyokeres.

Ashworth wanted Gyokeres to settle down away from Brighton, highlighting that he was 23 and needed to find a home.

“This represents a good move for Viktor, as well as both clubs,” said Ashworth, as quoted by Sussex Live.

“He’s spent the last two years out on loan, but this gives him the chance to really settle in one place and play regularly at a really high standard, which at 23 is paramount for his own development.

“Coventry were impressed with the impact he made in his relatively short time there last season and that can be an added confidence boost for Viktor. We wish him all the best for the future,” he added.

Gyokeres impossible for United to ignore

We don’t for a second believe that Ashworth would be stubborn enough to not sign Gyokeres just because he sold him for a paltry fee in 2021.

Ashworth wants the best for United and Gyokeres has certainly taken his game to another level since leaving Brighton, justifying Ashworth in a way as he felt the striker needed to move on to fulfil his potential.

United scouted Gyokeres against Slovakia on Saturday according to The Sun, so he certainly appears to at least be on the radar.

Gyokeres scored the opener in a 2-1 win and then went and scored four goals in a 6-0 thrashing of Azerbaijan on Tuesday night.

The goals are flying in for Gyokeres and Amorim is surely interested in reuniting with his former striker, whether it’s in January or the summer.

Add in United’s problems in front of goal and Gyokeres is staring Ashworth in the face as the potential solution.

Ashworth would have to fork out much, much more than the £1million he sold Gyokeres for, but it may just be a deal worth striking as United embrace the Amorim era.
