‘The truth is…’ – Alvaro Fernandez breaks silence on his future and comments on Man United buy option

Manchester United continue to be linked with a move that will bring Alvaro Fernandez back to Old Trafford.

Since Ruben Amorim’s very first match as Manchester United head coach, it was clear that he would need extra options at wing-back.

The current squad didn’t have any players naturally suited to wing-back, which explains why United spent £25m signing Patrick Dorgu this January.

Amorim wanted a new left wing-back and Ineos delivered, even if it was the only senior signing made over the winter.

It seems that United snubbed Alvaro Fernandez for Dorgu this winter, but Amorim still needs reinforcements out wide and links to the 21-year-old refuse to go away.

Fernandez has thrived at Benfica this season, becoming a key player in their Liga Portugal and Champions League campaigns.

In January, Fernandez did not rule out a Benfica exit, but United ended the window with only Dorgu to strengthen their wing-back options.

However, United did make contact with Fernandez over the possibility of triggering his £15m buyback clause, but transfer expert Graeme Bailey told United in Focus that Fernandez was not entirely convinced by a move back to Manchester.

As per A Bola, quoted by Sport Witness, Fernandez was asked about his future again, but he played down rumours of a return by suggesting he is “overlooking” transfer links.

“The truth is that I’m overlooking it a bit,” Fernandez said.

“I’m concentrating on what I have to do, because every three days I have a game. There’s always interest from teams and everyone wants to grow, but I’m doing very well here (at Benfica).

“Manchester United have an option to buy that has been signed, but I’m very happy here.”

Man United eye £33m wing-back alternative

While he is versatile, Dorgu is best on the left which is also Fernandez’ preferred position.

United will likely invest in more wing-back options this summer, but Amorim’s focus will be addressing the right flank, which has seen Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo all play there this season.

Reports claim United are closing in on Geovany Quenda with Amorim eager to reunite with the Sporting Lisbon star.

Quenda will cost around £33m, with some claiming United have already struck an agreement to sign the 17-year-old in the summer.

With Ineos seemingly set on bringing Quenda to Manchester, there may be no space – or funds – remaining to bring Fernandez back.
