Alvaro Fernandez has continued to impress at Benfica following his transfer from Manchester United.

The former Manchester United academy graduate initially signed for Benfica in January 2024 on a loan deal and made his stay permanent last summer.

Alvaro Fernandez, 21, left Old Trafford due to limited opportunities in United’s first team under Erik ten Hag. The former United manager opted to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham rather than play Fernandez when United needed cover at left-back.

Luke Shaw’s injuries have worsened since then and United are now in the market for a new left wing-back. One option includes Denmark international Patrick Dorgu.

Dorgu has urged United to make an offer to Lecce this month, but United have more than one option for the left wing-back role.

United have a buy-back option for Fernandez, giving the Reds an advantage over Barcelona and Real Madrid to re-sign the promising wing-back.

Alvaro Fernandez doesn’t rule out move from Benfica

The Spaniard played 90 minutes a nine-goal thriller in the Champions League on Tuesday night, but Benfica were on the receiving end of a 5-4 defeat against Barcelona.

Fernandez was one of Benfica’s best players on the pitch which has been a regular trend this season.

This explains why Fernandez has been linked with so many top clubs this year. According to Sport, Barcelona are wary about United in their pursuit to sign the Benfica wideman.

Speaking to DAZN Portugal after the match, as relayed by Record, Fernandez was asked about a transfer away from Benfica after being linked with a return to United.

Fernandez said: “No. Actually, you never know, but I have a contract for many years here at Benfica, I’m happy. They gave me the opportunity to grow, and I owe everything to them.”

Manchester United make progress on new left wing-back signing

United are working hard to strike a deal with Lecce for Dorgu.

Signing Dorgu would mean United can focus on other positions in the summer transfer window rather than put the issues at left wing-back on the long finger. Sir Jim Ratcliffe will urges his Ineos team to operate astutely in the transfer market.

The Reds were never likely to sign multiple players in January, but Amorim could do with at least one addition to strengthen his team.

United’s squad doesn’t consist of any left wing-backs.
