Manchester United addressed an issue in their squad by signing Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window.

Ruben Amorim arrived at Manchester United in November and it became clear that he needed recruits to help the team adapt to the Portuguese coach’s preferred tactics.

Before Dorgu’s arrival, United were linked with the possibility of bringing Alvaro Fernandez back to the club.

Dorgu has quickly slotted into Amorim’s line-up, although he is suspended for the next two Premier League matches after being sent off in United’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town.

However, the Denmark international will be available to face Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night.

A new update on Fernandez has emerged with Portuguese outlet O Jogo suggesting United were leading the race for the Spanish wing-back before Amorim abandoned the chase as Dorgu was his preferred target.

Dorgu’s arrival has all but ruled out the prospect of the 21-year-old returning to Old Trafford.

What’s next for Alvaro Fernandez?

The former United academy graduate has been one of the star performers in this season’s Champions League, registering two assists in 9 matches.

Benfica have a huge fixture in Europe’s most prestigious competition this week when they take on Barcelona in the last 16 on Wednesday night.

The fixture has additional significance for Fernandez because the O Jogo report mentioned above states that Barcelona are one of the clubs interested in the exciting wing-back.

A strong finish to the season could see Fernandez earn a big move in the summer.

Meanwhile, United have a buy-back clause if they want to add another left wing-back to Amorim’s squad.
