Teden Mengi agrees Italy transfer as ‘significant’ Manchester United sell-on clause comes into play

Manchester United are looking to get one more signing over the line this week but may actually have one eye on a player who left Old Trafford last year.

This has been a productive summer for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag will be looking for one more signing before Friday’s transfer deadline.

United have been chasing a new midfielder and Manuel Ugarte is close to signing from Paris Saint-Germain.

Ugarte arrives just as Hannibal Mejbri has departed for Burnley and Scott McTominay prepares to sign for Napoli.

There may not be too much more business for United to do although Jadon Sancho wants a move to Chelsea over Juventus.

United may hope to get Sancho moved on before the deadline but could receive a cash boost from elsewhere.

Ex-Manchester United defender could land transfer

United allowed defender Teden Mengi to leave the club on deadline day this time last year.

Mengi joined Luton Town as he looked for a fresh start after an injury-hit spell in his career.

Mengi only ever made two first-team appearances for United and loans at Derby County and Birmingham City were a mixed bag.

The 22-year-old has really kicked on though and was hailed as a ‘revelation’ by Luton boss Rob Edwards in quotes given to The Lutonian.

Mengi impressed so much in the Premier League that he is now a wanted man ahead of transfer deadline day.

Foot Mercato report that Mengi has agreed to sign for Torino – but the Serie A side are yet to strike a deal with Luton.

Torino are now running out of time to get a deal done but Mengi could be on the move, potentially joining for United defender Chris Smalling in Italy.

United’s Mengi sell-on clause

Mengi has attracted major interest from a host of clubs since leaving United for Luton last year.

Bayer Leverkusen wanted Mengi whilst Nice – owned by Ineos – even considered signing Mengi as they lost Jean-Clair Todibo to West Ham United.

This is all great news for United, who stand to make a decent chunk of cash whenever Mengi does finally move on.

Reports earlier this year suggested that United have a ‘significant’ sell-on clause on Mengi.

United clearly felt that Mengi could really kick on and become a star elsewhere so made sure the club still had a stake in his future.

Mengi’s move may not fund another United signing but every little helps and his progress at Luton stands to make United a little more cash – possibly in the next 24 hours.
